ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrive Luang Prabang (No Meals)
Arrival in Luang Prabang you are met on arrival with private transfer to your hotel of choice.
Day 2: Luang Prabang (Breakfast, Dinner)
Drive to the beautiful waterfalls of Tat Khouangsi. Below the 90m drop of the main cascade are a series of pools, connected by smaller falls and cascades. At low water levels the water is an unbelievable turquoise, and swimming in the lower pools is a great way to cool off in the afternoon.
On the walk through the forest to the falls, you will also pass the Free the Bears project – home to a group of rescued Asiatic Black (Moon) Bears and one Malayan Sun Bear. In the early afternoon, they are often searching for food hidden in their enriched environment enclosures. Or they may just be sleeping!
The route home allows stopping at the villages of some of the (over 100) different Lao ethnic groups at Ban Thapene, Ban Ouay and Ban Ou.
Returning in the late afternoon, you may opt to finish the day by climbing the over 300 steps to the top of Mount Phousi, to be rewarded by a dazzling view from atop this iconic hill in the center of the city. Scattered on the slopes of the hillsides are various temples. In the evening, you are invited to participate in a Laotian tradition that predates
Buddhism: the Baci ceremony. Enjoy this traditional welcoming ceremony before dining on Luang Prabang and Laotian specialties.
Day 3: Luang Prabang (Breakfast, BBQ Dinner)
Rise early to witness one of the most magical and timeless scenes of Southeast Asia: hundreds of monks processing through the streets of Luang Prabang accepting offerings of food from the local residents and businesses. Rising early also gives the chance to wander through the fresh market on the way back to the hotel for breakfast.
Return to the UNESCO protected city centre to appreciate its unspoiled Laotian-colonial fusion architecture, taking in notable Buddhist temples: Wat Xiengthong, with its traditional roofs sweeping low to the ground, the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun, Wat Sene, the city’s oldest temple, and the shrines of Wat Aham and Wat Mai. Finish at the Royal Palace Museum.
Enjoy an evening out and about in Luang Prabang sampling the best of local life and delicious food.
Something you may not know about Laos is its penchant for the game of Petanque, which is similar to boules, bocce or lawn bowls. You will see Petanque being played by young and old alike throughout the country. Today, we would like you to experience this famous game at one of the local petanque courts with your guide and driver along with some local snacks and a bottle of Beer Lao.
Head for your main course over the Nam Khan bamboo bridge to the lovely setting of Dyen Sabai. Surrounded by huge bamboo on the banks of the river to enjoy a traditional Laotian BBQ.
Stroll back into town for a dessert or drink at the Mekong Sunset restaurant made famous by Barack Obama himself when he popped in for a fresh coconut.
